A question to all you fabric geeks out there.

I recently purchased 10 yards of linen from a merchant I’ve used many times in the past. This is what the color looked like on my monitor.

This is what it looked like when it arrived, but much BRIGHTER, way obnoxious.  Like goldenrod on a really hot day and the cicadas are scritching in the heat brighter.

I am undecided about what to do.

  • Bleach it and then re-dye
  • Put just a tidge of bleach in the water and see if it just dulls it a bit (have no idea if thatis feasible)
  • Send it back
  • Overdye it with coffee or some weak brown

Any bright ideas?

  1. Sympathy
I sympathize. I ordered wool that was called “buttercream” but when it arrived it was khaki tan. Uck. But did I send it back? No. It goes against my nature to let fabric get away. Usually I get exactly what I expected when I order online.
    Can you return it?

  2. Re: Sympathy
I too usually get something close, usually it’s less bright than the image, not more bright.
I probably COULD return it, but darn it, this was supposed to be my new slip cover for the visitors from France for Christmas. *sigh*
I might snip a bit and see what happens in a very diluted bleach bath tonight…

  3. I’d try overdye with something ‘sad’ (say, brown). Bleach can be very unpredictable and might give you a very streaky and weird result.
If all else fails, I’ll buy a good-sized hunk of it off you because I, strange unit that I am, love that shade of hot gold πŸ™‚

  4. Stand up and demand that you get what you asked for (you do deserve it, you know) or take what the universe gives you knowing in the end it will all turn out? Isn’t that the question which comes up again and again…
I bought a gown made of fustian linen a few years back that came arrived a bit too “ice blue” for my taste. A dye bath with RIT brown toned everything down nicely.

  5. Stand up and demand that I get what I asked for? When as a web designer and developer I know that monitors differ and that the color on their monitor maybe reflects the color exactly? Knowing that buying fabric on line is a crap shoot when it comes to quality, color, and hand?
    I don’t think so.
But I do think I might “sadden” as you and Countess E suggest. It will make it too dark I think but it might work for something else.

  6. It’s funny. I too love it, even though it isn’t a good color for my complexion. It’s only the wrong color for the living room couch.
If I don’t use it, you just might get your wish. πŸ™‚
