When I began working on research for my writing, a wonderful Welsh woman took it upon herself to help me with history, culture and geographical references. She gave me a word which changed my life — Hiraeth. In translation the word loses some of its mysticism, but it essentially describes the phenomenon of genetic memory in very emotional and spiritual terms. In short, it is a profound longing for one’s homeland, if one happens to be Welsh or Cornish. When I discovered shortly thereafter that I was only 3 generations removed from the old country, so many things began to make sense. The affect of Celtic drums on my body and psyche, for instance. No escaping 350 years of family history in the tiny hamlets on the Cornish coast…fishermen, farmers, thieves, smugglers, heretics–and undoubtedly a witch or two…Thanks for posting this. Loreena stirs my soul 🙂
I haven’t heard this for ages. Thank you so much for posting – I’m going to try and work out how to post it too – it’s some of the most uplifting music you’ll ever hear. She really is fantastic.
It does tug at you in a way that’s hard to explain.
